Painted Piano Idea- How To Paint Your Piano
I have never shared my painted piano with you all and thought it was time I did! Lately, I’ve been working on updating our master bedroom and finished up decorating the top of our piano. The master bedroom may seem like a strange place for a piano (I kind of agree) but it’s literally the only place on our main level that we can fit it. Neither Matt nor I desire to lug it downstairs so for now the main bedroom is where it lives. And in all reality, I kind of like it in the master. In the evenings, I can shut the door and play without worrying about waking anyone up!
How To Paint Your Piano
My friend sold me this piano for $125; I was so excited to finally have a piano in our home! My babysitter gave me lessons when I was younger and it’s always something that I’ve enjoyed doing. Before this, I had an electric keyboard which just isn’t the same as the real deal.
After lightly sanding the piano with fine sand paper, I gave it a coat or two of Zinnser primer. This is the ONLY primer I use when painting! After taping around the keys, pedals, etc. I gave it a couple coats of the color Blanched from the Magnolia Line. A paintbrush and a foam roller is what I used to apply it.
After my paint was dry, I lightly sanded the edges with fine sand paper to give it a little bit of character. I then applied a dark wax to certain areas of the piano where I wanted the color to be a little more antique looking. I finished the top off with a clear wax.
As you can see in the picture above, I left a small section the dark brown color. I didn’t want to cover up the “Kimball” label and really like the look of it!

Most of these items were found thrifting or at garage sales. The old window panes came from an old farmhouse next to our favorite pumpkin patch. I think it’s the perfect backdrop to the piano.
This light was a recent Amazon find that you can purchase here. I am SO happy with it! There are 3 different shades of light settings, cooler, neutral and warm. You hold down on the little button to brighten the light or dim it. I’ve never seen anything like it! And this aged brass color is everything.
All of the frames were thrifted, some simple paint was all it took to give them a new look. I always have good luck finding frames at garage sales for next to nothing!
I purchased these faux flowers from one of my favorite shops in our downtown area. An antique flower frog holds them in place.
This basket was a Target find from the Studio McGee collection; you can buy it here. It houses our piano books.
To add some texture and coziness I threw this rug over the piano bench. It is SO soft. You can purchase it here.
So glad I chose to paint our piano! Can’t wait to show you all our master bedroom makeover in the near future!
