Small Closet Makeover in Emmy’s Room

Kayla

The other week I shared Emmy’s room makeover with you all- it turned out so cute! One of the areas I focused on was her little closet. Did the closet work? Sure. But I knew it could be better- I felt like a lot of space was being wasted and so I got to work. I didn’t have the money or time to invest in some elaborate closet organization system so I did a lot of searching and came up with my own plan for the space. I wanted to dedicate a whole blog post to this little closet because it turned out so good and her storage situation is much better than before!

Closet Before

Lets take a look at her closet before. Mind you, this room has been torn apart the last few months because of construction, so everything was kind of just thrown in here. Literally. Thrown.

Yikes a spikes. This bookshelf was in our toy room for the last 8 years but we recently brought it up to hold her books and other items. It really didn’t work that great- space seemed crammed. The shoe rack on the door worked fine but a lot of times it felt in the way and also made the space feel tight.

Closet Makeover

First step was to empty out the closet and start with a fresh space. I put together this shelf from Walmart- under $40 and was one of the easiest furniture pieces I’ve put together! The directions were very clear and all of the pieces fit perfectly. A couple years ago I bought a shelf from Wayfair for MUCH more money and it was SUCH a pain to put together. We ended up throwing it out because it was literally falling apart- sometimes more money doesn’t always mean better!

I had some leftover wallpaper so applied it to this little section in the closet. I painted the walls, trim and door to match the rest of the room.

After a few tries, I found the best tension rods for this space- you can find them here. They are very strong, very easy to put up and are pretty!

This shelf is a GAME CHANGER! I was able to put all of her shoes on the bottom shelf- I might try to find a basket that fits in there to hold them so it looks a little more tidy but for now this works great. She is able to reach them all (couldn’t with the shoe rack on the door) and it makes it easy for her to put them away.

Little mouse baskets hold gymnastic leotards, shin guards and hair accessories. Her books are on the third shelf which she can still reach easily. The baskets hold magnatiles and blocks. Her and Brielle still play with magnatiles all the time! One of the girl’s most used and loved toys.

I folded some of her t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and sweaters and put them on this shelf. It is very easy to see what is available and frees up hanging space. Above those are 2 bins I found at Walmart- more storage!

I’m in the process of buying all matching hangers. Matching anything brings me joy. I found some good, cheap ones at Hobby Lobby!

I added some hooks to this little side of the closet for added storage.

Changing out the door hardware was also something we did, this knob is beautiful and well made.

I am SO happy with how her closet turned out; I am inspired to make over more of our closets now!
