Favorite Copper Spray Paint

Hi guys! Today I want to talk about my favorite copper spray paint. Spray paint is the quickest, easiest way to change up an item. The trick with spray paint is to do very light coats and to always keep your can moving. Stay in one place too long and you’ll get too heavy of a coat and get drips. No one likes drips. And if you put too heavy of a coat on it wont dry properly. I’ve learned all of these tips the hard way!

I’ve always wanted a light fixture here on this side of our front door. I found a copper light fixture I loved but didn’t want to spend money on it at this time or pay to have a light hardwired in.

I remembered I had this old light fixture that I wasn’t using and decided to spray paint it!

After lots of research I decided to go with this Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish Copper Spray paint. You can purchase it HERE.

To install the light I just drilled two pilot holes and then screwed the light fixture in. Easy peasy.

I glued a battery operated puck light into the light. The puck light I own has a remote control and timer to it. So I can set my light to come on in the evening and it will automatically turn off. You can purchase a puck light HERE. I first learned of this trick from Nesting With Grace. It’s brilliant! Someday we will actually have a light hardwired in but for now, this works!

So excited we have a cute light out here now! I have lots more ideas for this space! Can’t wait to bring some greenery onto our porch…. it has been hard for me to hold out but I know mid-west weather can be crazy and it could possibly snow next week. Or the week after that. And so on. 🙂 So I will wait a few more weeks.

Pine Boards Ceiling Treatment

Hi friends! A few weeks ago, when the coronavirus started getting more serious, we decided to grab a few items for projects that we’ve put on the back burner for a while just in case we were both stuck at home for a period of time. Fortunately at this point in time I am the only one at home and we are able to keep our small business open. But since we had everything on hand for a project I’ve been wanting to do for a while, we decided to do it this last week! Doing this project actually helped both Matt and I take our minds off of life for some of Sunday. Owning a small business has been hard and stressful during the last month or so. On top of that, homeschooling, new schedules, etc. has kind of taken a toll on us. So this was the perfect time to clear our minds and focus on this project!

We put up pine boards in the trey ceiling! It warms up the space so much! And adds a ton of character.

This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time now. I think half the battle is just getting all the supplies you need for a project.

I had a color of wood in my mind but couldn’t find any stain to match it. I ended up mixing 3 different colors to get this stain color. It turned out exactly how I pictured it in my mind! I ended up using a combination of Varathane Early American Classic Wood Interior Stain,  Varathane Provincial Classic Wood Interior Stain,  & Varathane Dark Walnut Classic Interior Wood Stain.

We used a quarter in-between each board so we’d have the same spacing throughout and used a nail gun to attach the pine boards to our runners going across our ceiling.

Matt did all the measuring and mathematics for this project. We were a tiny bit nervous that we wouldn’t get 12 even boards into the space but Matt’s mathematics proved correct! Never doubted him. 😉

This project was under $100.

Isn’t it amazing how wood totally warms up a space?

Tempar Wallpaper in Laundry Room

During this social isolation time I am trying to stay as busy as possible! Not hard with 4 daughters! Being at home has really been my experience the last 8-10 years of my life. Obviously not to this extent of course, but being a stay at home mom and consistently scheduling everything around nap times, feedings, etc., I really am at home a lot. I’ve found for me, especially in recent years, projects keep me sane. I don’t like sitting around a lot and I would rather be working on a project than laying on my couch taking a nap. I honestly don’t like naps. My mom says even as a little girl I would fight nap time. See mom, it’s just how I’m made!

I read a quote a few weeks back that stuck with me: “she defined the creative impulse as “making something more beautiful than it has to be.” That’s it. I find making our home as cozy, safe, warm, and hygge as I possibly can, brings me joy. It’s important. It’s valuable. It’s joy-giving to me and hopefully to my loved ones who live here.

My project this last weekend was to hang up wallpaper in our laundry room. I had some leftover from my fridge project in our kitchen. It took me under an hour to put up and I love the big impact it makes!

Before: This was my first makeover on the laundry room. At the time I was still trying to figure out my style in our new home. And Matt had asked me to paint it yellow… so I did…. reluctantly!

After:

Super cute, right?!

This wallpaper is one my favorites. You can purchase it HERE. I have noticed the price has gone up since I bought mine.

Not too long ago we installed the bead board, hooks and painted it white. It really helped brighten up the space and made it more useful.

The wallpaper adds such a fun design element.

The hardest part is getting your seams and patterns to match up. Once you get the hang of it though it goes pretty quickly! Like anything in life, the more you practice, the better you will get at it.

Painted Porch Makeover

Hi friends! Today I want to share all the details on our painted front porch makeover!

Years ago I found out that you could paint your cement porch. I was super excited and did this striped pattern on our porch.

This is what our steps looked like. Because they are not covered, every Spring I would have to re-paint them. A little more high maintenance but I have never minded because I like the look so much and it literally takes me 15 minutes.  I decided I was ready for a new look so grabbed my paint and paintbrush and got to work!

I will link all products used at the bottom of this post. First step was priming and then painting the steps white. I then taped out my pattern and painted it black. I wanted a stair runner type look. Make sure to measure so that your “runner” is centered!

Once that was done I decided to give my actual porch floor a fresh coat of white paint as well.

I love how much it brightened the area up!

The finished product!

To me, our porch is an extension of our indoor living space. We love spending time out here in the evenings or on a nice day.

I can’t wait to spruce this space up for Spring with lots of plants and I’m keeping my eye out for a mat to layer under this one.

Wallpapered Fridge

In our kitchen we don’t have a lot of open wall space.  Every wall has cabinets on it so there is no where to put an open shelf or hooks to display items. A while ago I added these wooden hangers from H & M to the side of our fridge using magnets. It makes the perfect spot to display some cute decor pieces & items we use in the kitchen. Immediately I knew I wanted to add some wallpaper here. It felt kind of blah to me so I began hunting for stick and peel wallpaper. Holy moly. Lots of options out there but I finally narrowed it down to one and ordered it.

I purchased this wallpaper HERE. I fell in love with the scalloped design and it was a great price point. I’ve seen a few other bloggers use this same wallpaper in their projects and thought it would go nicely with our new white kitchen. It’s definitely more modern than what I would typically do but I find myself being drawn towards more of that style lately.

The wallpaper was easier to put up than I thought it would be. I’ve never done it before so didn’t really know what to expect. I didn’t time myself but my guess is it took me right around a half hour from start to finish. The hardest part is to make sure you don’t have air bubbles, that’s what the squeegee is for and to make sure your pattern lines up. If you do end up with a few air bubbles just barely poke it with your razor blade and the bubble will smooth right out and you wont see the tiny hole at all.

Wallpaper sure has come a long ways. I can remember when I was little spending hours scraping pink kitten wallpaper off of my bedroom walls when I decided I had outgrown it. My mom had our living room walls adorned with pink and blue heart wallpaper that she had to scrape off at some point as well. Isn’t it funny that we look back at that and think, “What were they/I thinking?!” I wonder if my girls will think the same thing of me when they get older. Funny how styles & trends change.

I think the kitchen and dining room flows nicely together now.

My grandpa & grandma’s home in Omaha is adorned with wallpaper as well. They aren’t with us anymore but we were lucky enough to get to keep the house; thanks to my mom and dad and aunt and uncle. We have so many special memories there and whenever we travel to Omaha we stay there. Opening the red front door and walking in, it still smells the same it smelled 10 years ago and memories always flood my mind. We went there this last weekend and some of the wallpaper my grandma had put up actually looks like some of the trends I am seeing now. I’m sure that wallpaper has been there for over 30 years. There are also macrame plant holders throughout the home. Isn’t it crazy how styles come back? Who decides when this will happen?! For real. I want to know!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, painting my kitchen cabinets white has allowed me to start transforming our home into a space that brings me joy. If you’ve been putting off doing something because you’re fearful of failing…. just do it! If it’s been on your heart for a while just go for it. It’s on your heart for a reason. Now I wish I wouldn’t of waited almost 5 years to paint my cabinets!

Hope you enjoyed this small project I did. Goes to show how something small can make a big impact! Thanks for stopping by!

The Last Swaddle, the Last Song.

The last droplet of milk will fall on this chair. The last swaddle. The last song.

Hours upon hours were spent rocking, praying, crying, smiling and laughing.

The months have drifted by like the seasons; anxiously awaiting for the new things of the next but also sorry to see it all pass.

The sleepless nights, the aches and pains, the struggles of it all are a distant memory. And all I remember when I look in your bright, blue eyes are your tiny fingers and tiny toes, your sweet scent, your tiny body wrapped up in your blue blanket and the innocence of your being.

You take your first step and you smile and clap. I clap and smile with you and tears drop onto my face because I know something you don’t. This is the last first steps. There will be no other.

There will be no more first “mama” and “dada” uttered from a little mouth. No more bottles warmed up in the wee hours of the night. No more car seats carried to and fro. No more droplets of milk will fall.

You cling to me and I cling to you. The scent of baby lotion lingers on your skin and I vow to always remember the smell. I look down at your sweet face, chubby cheeks, long eyelashes, creamy skin and smile. What a gift you are.

You are the last, sweet baby.  The end of an era. An era full of firsts. Full of struggles, hardships, stress, pains, questions, worry, tears and breakdowns. But also full of a love I didn’t know existed. Of wisdom. Growth. A leadership pulled out of me that I didn’t know I had in me. Laughter. Joy. First steps, words, teeth, bubble baths, dance recitals, soccer games, math tests. So many firsts, too many to count.

Yes, the end of an era. And what a grand era it was.

Don’t Mistake my Niceness for Weakness

Source

“I realize I’ve bought into the lie- that if you think I’m nice, maybe you don’t think I’m smart or strong. Sometimes nice doesn’t feel like enough. Nice feels like a pushover, a doormat, the one you can’t take too seriously. The nice one is the shy one standing in the corner.”

“Nice is powerful. If you’re one of the nice ones don’t eclipse your light by believing nice isn’t enough or pining away for a personality other than the one God gave you. Be who God created you to be.” Author Unknown

I wrote this down in my journal years ago because it spoke to my soul. It was an “aha” moment for me. In my life I have been called “nice” SO much. You would think I would’ve taken this as a compliment every time I heard it but honestly it used to bother me and I really didn’t know why. But I read this passage out of some book that I can’t remember the title of now and I was like wow, this author just put into words what I’ve been feeling for years and years but couldn’t quite put into words myself.

For some reason, at the time, I equated nice with being boring. Naive. Pushed aside. Weak. Walked all over. Dull. Uninteresting. Left out. Why? Because I believe this is what our world tells us at times, if not most of the time.

But since then, I found truth……

I can be nice and strong. Nice and smart. Nice and interesting. Nice and wise. Nice and fearless. Nice and exciting. Nice and bold. Nice and powerful. Nice and confident.

If you’re a fellow labeled “nice” girl I pray you would read these words and embrace who you are and not try to be somebody you’re not. Nice is a compliment. Nice is powerful and beautiful.

Don’t mistake my niceness for weakness; it’s far from.

Happy New Year!

Happy 2020!!!! I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve! We rang in the New Years at home, in our pjs, with some Sparkling Apple-Mango juice because the traditional Sparkling Grape juice we usually get was all sold out. We had the noisy maker things, the sparkly “Happy New Year” headbands and take-out. It was a pretty great evening. I was the only one who made it to mid-night, not surprisingly. But all the girls slept in this morning which like never happens so I still got plenty of sleep!

I am a resolution maker person. I think it’s important to take some time and reflect on life. The end of a year and the beginning of a new one allows one to do that. I wanted to compile all of my thoughts into one place today and thought I’d share them all with you.

I like to focus on a word or two for the year and a bible verse. My word for 2019 was “trust”. My bible verse was Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do and he will show you which path to take.” I really wanted to focus on trusting God in every area of my life. 2019 had it’s ups and downs as most years do. Bringing Emersyn into this world was by far the BEST part of 2019. She has been such a joy and has completed our little family.

54799342_10101227056306889_1794585942137241600_o

2019 had it’s fair share of downs though as well. Not trying to be negative but just real. 2019 was not my best year. There were hard, discouraging times in multiple areas of my life, both mentally and physically. When I really started to reflect on the year, 2019, I felt in some ways I took a few steps backwards. I felt like the progress I thought I had made in certain areas all came crashing down on me and what I thought was true, really wasn’t. But after more time reflecting, I can honestly say the hard things of 2019…. I am happy they happened because things that needed to be changed, wouldn’t of been changed, unless those hard things took place. I wish I could say I trusted God through it all but I didn’t. I tried. Really hard. But I didn’t always trust. I took matters into my own hands too many times to count. But I did grow. I did trust HIM more than what I did in years prior so there was success.

I am so excited for 2020 and all the possibilities that it holds! I have two words for this year: Intentionality and Discipline. Being intentional in my relationships, my health, my time and my finances. And being disciplined enough to follow through in these areas. I always have good intentions but more often than not life just kind of takes over and I can just kind of throw my hands up in the air and say, “whatever, it’s not worth it, I give up”. That’s where discipline comes in. My goal is to not let life take over my life.

My bible verse for the year: Ephesians 5:15-17 “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

I’m going to share some of my goals with you all. I have lots more but they are a lot more personal. I think writing out your goals is a really important step in making goals. Having them wrote down solidifies them instead of them just floating around in your head.

  1. Rise early before the girls- Quiet time with God- continue to grow and pursue Him
  2. Less time on technology (I have made “rules” for myself in this area)
  3. Health- This is a BIG one for me. I’ve been more sick in the last 6 months than I ever have been and I’m just fed up with it! This year I am going to focus on taking better care of myself. Eat healthier, less eating out, lose the rest of the baby weight (Emersyn is almost 1 so I can’t use that as an excuse anymore….darnit…), use Fitness Pal (an awesome app that has helped me lose weight in the past), workout 2-3x a week, go to bed earlier, take my vitamins (hate swallowing pills so I don’t always do a good job of this), get more sleep, and I’m going to start lifting weights.
  4. Simplify. Get rid of stuff. Things I don’t love, things we don’t use. Donate.

My hope is that some of this will help you in making resolutions for yourself. If you haven’t yet, take some time and reflect on your year, write down some goals, choose a bible verse to remember and focus on throughout your year. I have my verse taped inside my bathroom cabinet so I see it everyday.

I really do hope this year brings you all the good things. I hope you love and laugh more, I hope you go on adventures, step out of your comfort zone, grow closer to God, take a risk or two, grow more comfortable in your skin, gain a good quality friend, chase your dreams and give yourself and the people around you more grace.

I’m so thankful if you took time to come on over today and read my post. Thanks for stopping by!
