How To Have a Cozy Home in Summer
Cozy vibes aren’t just for snow falling nights by a fire; your home can be cozy any time of year with a few purposeful items and things done. I always desire our home to be a cozy, safe haven and there are a few things I do during the warmer months to still make it feel cozy.
5 Things to do to Create a Cozy Home in Summer
De-Clutter
The last thing I want to be doing is constantly cleaning and picking up things and toys around our home. With 4 kids this is kind of inevitable BUT I have found the less stuff we have, the less stuff there is to clean up. Especially during summer when we are all home, this is even more important. On a constant basis I am going through toys, drawers, clothes, etc. and donating or selling anything I want to get rid of. A cleaner home helps me feel more serene which ties into coziness for me. My home is never always clean but with less stuff it does feel less overwhelming.
Take a room at a time- go through closets, drawers, decor- anything you don’t love, don’t use, or doesn’t bring you joy- get rid of! Today I finally put up an exercise bike for sale that has been getting zero use the last year and just taking up space in our storage room, along with some decor pieces I haven’t used in a while.
Lighter Blankets & Throw Pillows
During summer I store away heavier throw blankets and pillow covers and bring in more lightweight ones. Pillows and blankets definitely help cozy up a space and in my opinion are still needed in the warmer months. I recently found these blankets from Grandinroad– originally $60, on sale for under $20!! I purchased both colors and they are PERFECT for the warmer months. Nice and lightweight, good quality and very soft. This blanket is similar.
I also like to decorate with lighter colors in the warmer months – I recently purchased these and these from Amazon – lighter colored pillow covers that are perfect for summer!
Flowers & Plants
Give me ALL the live plants – our home is filled with them! You don’t necessarily need 1,738 like me, but adding a few live plants to your home brings your space to life! And also adds coziness in my opinion. If you’ve ever looked at a professional decor magazine or pictures from one on-line somewhere; you will notice that in pretty much every photo there is nature involved. Whether it’s large branch clippings in a vase, succulents in a dish, fresh cut flowers, or a potted plant – one of these is usually captured in the picture.
If you aren’t a live plant type of person, lucky for you, there are plenty options of faux plants and flowers that look like the real deal. I just recently put together a few faux flower bouquets that you can see here.
Diffuse Essential Oils
Smell is a HUGE factor in having a cozy home. I mean, if you walk into someone’s home and it doesn’t smell good- the cozy factor meter instantly goes way down. Or think about your favorite store- a lot of times they will have a signature scent that you attribute to that place. I always think of Abercrombie & Fitch – they have a distinct smell that makes the experience in their store much more enjoyable. A few years ago I ditched candles and now diffuse essential oils every single day. They are good for our health, smell SO good, and I don’t have to worry about an open flame. During summer I love diffusing fresh, citrus scents: peppermint, spearmint, lemon, lime, etc. Go HERE to get started on your oily journey!
Faux Candles
Speaking of candles, since I no longer light them in our home, I buy all faux! All of the candles in our home are on a timer and in the evening hours they typically come on and it gives instant cozy vibes, even in the summer! Last night I was curled up in a blanket watching the first episode of Floret Flower, I had my cozy candles flickering on the fireplace mantle, it was thundering and raining outside, and in that moment our home was exuding with coziness. You can buy my favorite ones here and here.
